SQL Search

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Will SQL Search be free forever?

No. SQL Search will be free for as long as it is a standalone tool.

Eventually, SQL Search will be come part of SQL Prompt and will no longer be available on its own as a standalone tool.

We will do our best to communicate any planned changes to our users.

What is SQL Search's relationship to SQL Prompt?

SQL Search will eventually become part of SQL Prompt.

Until then, we're making it available as a free standalone tool.

How does Exact Match work?

Selecting Exact Match means search results are returned matching the exact phrase you type.

For example, if you search for create table and Exact Match is off, the results include all instances of create OR table.

If you search for create table and Exact Match is on, the results include only instances of " create table"

Note that when you search for a single word, Exact Match does not affect the results.

What versions of SQL Server does SQL Search support?

SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008.

Note that SQL Server 2000 is not supported.

SQL Search is installed but disabled – why?

SQL Search is disabled if you are not connected to a server, or if you are only connected to a SQL Server 2000 instance.

How do I add a new server to search?

The drop down list of servers is not updated automatically when you connect to a new server.

To add a server to search, connect to it, and click the SQL Search button. The list is updated.

Does SQL Search work in SQL Server Management Studio Express Edition?

Yes. However, SQL Search only works in SQL Server Management Studio 2005 Express Edition if Extensibility.dll is also installed.

If you encounter issues using SQL Search with SQL Server Management Studio 2005 Express Edition, please contact support.
